While at Duquesne University, Jack was in the ROTC and then graduated with a business degree. After graduation, he was commissioned in the U.S. Air Force and served as a navigator in the Air National Guard for 23 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel. During this time, Jack traveled the world and made life-long friends. His most prized business success began in 1948 when Rose's father opened Carrick Poultry. In 1958, Jack and Rose purchased Carrick Poultry from her father. In 1963, when broasted chicken originated, Jack started what would become his famous broasted chicken. Fresh poultry, seafood, and broasted chicken created the foundation to build a strong family business. It was a family affair, in which Rose and the kids spent their fair share of time working at the store, and eventually grandchildren as well. Jack was the former owner of Frisch's of Caste Village and co-owner of Chicken Derby in Pleasant Hills. He passed down the family business to his son, Dennis, so he could begin retirement. However, due to his work ethic and needing to stay busy, you could always find Jack at the store. Jack treasured time with his family and they skied every weekend at Seven Springs or traveled to other states to enjoy the slopes. Not only did Jack travel the world with the Air Force, he and Rose also traveled for leisure. Just a few places they explored together include Germany, Italy, Tahiti, and Hawaii. Jack and Rose learned to play golf later in life and spent much of their time on the golf course at South Hills Country Club. Through their travels, they fell in love with Hilton Head Island, S.C. and would spend weeks at a time there enjoying the beaches and golf courses with friends. For their 50th wedding anniversary, Jack and Rose, their three kids, and eight grandkids celebrated on HHI together for a week. Jack enjoyed spending time floating around in the pool, Raising the Jolly Roger for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and making the most out of life with his family and friends. Jack had a bigger than life personality and so many people had the opportunity to know and love him. Jack was willing to do anything for his family and friends. Jack and Rose were members of St. Elizabeth Parish for 52 years. Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, on Sunday, from 4-8 p.m. and Monday, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Prayer on Tuesday morning at 9:15. BOWMAN ANNA (VUKMIR) PEACEFULL...
BOWMAN ANNA (VUKMIR) Peacefully on August 15, 2018, age 72, of North Versailles. Anna was an amazing person who left all of those in her company a little bit better off from their time with her. She brightened rooms, warmed hearts, and was easy to bring to tears with laughter. Her love for her people was unconditional and permanent. Anna was an incredible daughter to her parents and saw to her Mother's care with an undying passion. She cherished her brother, Mel, and always felt so lucky to have such a great big brother. She adored her boys (nephews) and always offered them sage advice through the bumpy roads of life. She welcomed with open and loving arms the wives of her nephews as though she had known them for many years. Her bountiful heart expanded even more with the blessings of seven great-nieces and nephews whose company she could never tire of. She relished her time with her sister in law, Joanne, as they had their babysitting lunches with the kids where there were never any rules. Anna was extremely fortunate to have such devoted friends by her side like Steve who always made it to all Vukmir family events as he is one of the family. She truly was a teacher at heart, as shown in her classrooms at Penn Hills but also to all of those in her life who she thoughtfully enriched with everlasting knowledge, some think enough to have beat anyone at Jeopardy. She was a lover of the arts and the words of Shakespeare, Thoreau, Emerson, and her main man, James Taylor. Anna was a pillar of love and peace that will never be replaced on this earth. Everyone should have been lucky enough to know her. If you look up, you'll see that Heaven just got a little brighter.
