MESSNER PAUL A. 72, of Palm Harbor, Florida, formerly of McKeesport and Mt. Lebanon, PA, passed away early Monday, February 10, 2014. A graduate of McKeesport High School and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Thomas and Cecilia Messner of McKeesport. Paul had retired to Florida following a career as a manufacturers' representative. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cathy Cullen Messner; two daughters, Stacy Schroer and Casey Gosling; four grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and brother, Robert T. Messner of Pittsburgh. Paul enjoyed traveling, reading, history, and lighthouses, but most of all, his family, who were with him in his last days. NICHOLSON JEFFREY PORTER Services will be held in Santa Cruz on Saturday for Jeffrey Nicholson who passed away peacefully in Santa Cruz on February 10, 2014, following a lengthy battle against cancer. Mr. Nicholson enjoyed celebrating his 70th birthday on January 27, 2014. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he graduated from Bethel Park High School, and attended Point Park College in Pittsburgh. Upon completing his education, Mr. Nicholson served his country in the US Marines Corps from 1969 to 1975. For more than 35 years, Mr. Nicholson was a food and beverage director in New Orleans, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta. He loved his family, the outdoors and wagering on football games, and enjoyed winding down listening to smooth jazz. He was a wonderful father, scoutmaster and soccer coach, with boundless support for his son. Upon moving to Santa Cruz 15 years ago, Mr. Nicholson began a second career in sales with Kelly Moore Paints on Ocean Street. He leaves many dear friends, co-workers and colleagues, who respected his knowledge in the commercial paint trade and construction industry. The move to the left coast provided him the opportunity to explore his hobby of boating, and fond memories of adventures on the Monterey bay will be cherished by his family and friends. Mr. Nicholson is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joshua and Elizabeth Nicholson and their daughter, Abigail Nancy Nicholson. He also leaves his former spouse and dear friend, Susi Nicholson of Scottsdale, Arizona; and his two sisters, Sally Nicholson of San Francisco, Nancy and Tom Driscoll of Mt. Shasta. A farewell celebration to honor Mr. Nicholson will be on Saturday, February 15, 2014, at the Paradox Hotel, Cypress room from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Any kind acts of charity can be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project. A private burial will take place in his family's plot in Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Pennsylvania. SMITH FRANCES “FRAN” Frances Lillian Peirce Smith, 91, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, in Pittsburgh, PA, with her children at her side. She was predeceased in 2011 by her husband, Morell. She was born April 8, 1922, in Palmerton, PA, daughter of the late Lotta and Willis McG. Peirce of Palmerton. Fran is survived by one brother, Donald (Peggy) Peirce of Hilton Head, SC; four children, Linda (Paul Scalamogna), Pittsburgh, Dana (Kathy), Perkiomenville, Joanne, Allison Park, and Sally (Mike) Wilson, Centerville, TX; grandchildren, Beth (Martin) Uniacke, Tara Ciccone (Mike Barbalace), Stephen Zomolsky, Susan (Daniel) Brookman, Pamela and Jennifer Smith, Megan, Justin and Matthew Wilson; great-grandchildren, Page and Kiersten Zomolsky, Joseph Ciccone and Jack Peirce Brookman; great- great-granddaughters, Madisyn and MacKenzie. She graduated in 1943 from Drexel University with a degree in Home Economics and later earned her master's degree. She was head of the equestrian team at Drexel her junior and senior years. Fran retired from Pottstown High School in 1984 after 21 years. Her first love was cooking and she was an innovative chef, skilled pianist, excellent Bridge player, gifted horsewoman and loved sailing on Lake Wallenpaupack. She was a prolific reader and avid crossword aficionado. Evidence of her creativity could be found throughout her home and she gifted her family with many artfully made quilts. She and her family lived in Lancaster, PA, Kenmore, NY, Longmeadow, MA, Palmerton, PA and Pottstown, PA. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 22, 2014, 11a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Boyertown, PA. Interment will be Sunday, February 23, 2014, 2 p.m. in Towamensing Cemetery, Palmerton, PA. WOLTER JAMES BERNHARD, Jr. Age 30, of Monroeville, PA, formerly of Owensboro, KY, passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014. Beloved son of James Bernhard, Sr. and Debra J. Wolter; loving father of Landry Elizabeth Baker; wonderful boyfriend of Sarah Jane Baker; brother of Christopher J. Wolter; grandson of Carl and the late Patricia Wolter and Curtis, Sr. and MinnOra Johnson. Jimmy was a U.S. Marine with two tours in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom. Jimmy was an infantry rifleman who was awarded a Bronze Service Star and many other various service medals. After being honorably discharged, he became an engineer for the gas exploration industry.
