SMITH WALTER Age 83, of West Homestead, Pennsylvania died at his home on March 24, 2018. He was the son of the late Harry Smith and Guida Wilson. Mr. Smith attended the Pittsburgh Public Schools and later earned a Master's Degree from Duquesne University. Mr. Smith was formerly employed as a teacher in the Pittsburgh Public School System. Soon after, he accepted a position with Penn State University as an instructor in the Labor Relations Department. Later in life, he was employed by the borough of West Homestead, Pennsylvania. He served on many local, state, and federal governing boards; and, was a member of numerous municipal, county, and state organizations. Mr. Smith proclaimed that one of his greatest achievements as an educator was an 18-month teaching position in Gaborone, Botswana (Southern Africa), where he taught labor relations to government officials and business leaders. He had a fervent love of baseball and an even stronger adulation for his wife, Dorothy and his family. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by three sisters, Geraldine Bove, Mary Combs, and Bernice Platt; and one brother, Harry Smith. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy V. Smith (Whitsett, North Carolina); two devoted sons, Michael and Gregory Smith (Greenville, South Carolina); sisters, Emma Phifer and Cecelia Blango; and brother, Charles Smith. Mr. Smith is also survived by two grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
